On August 14th, 1987, a young Mark McGwire announced himself to Major League Baseball in a very big way. The Oakland Athletics slugger crushed his 49th home run of the season, setting a new major league record for home runs by a rookie.

McGwire’s power had quickly become one of baseball’s biggest stories, and the record-breaking blast showed that the rookie was anything but ordinary. His 49 homers helped make his first season one of the most memorable rookie campaigns in baseball history.

It was a sign of things to come for McGwire, who would go on to become one of the most recognizable power hitters of his generation.
