Daily Prompt @ The Pie!

Daily writing prompt
What’s a chapter of your life you’d title "The Hard Years" — and what got you through it?

There’s always a stretch of life where it feels like every step forward is followed by two steps back. Plans fall apart. Worries pile up. Sleep becomes harder to find, and the future seems much less certain than it once did.

The funny thing about difficult seasons is that they rarely announce themselves. They don’t arrive with a warning label. One day you’re living life as usual, and before you know it, you’re just trying to make it through the week… then the month… then the year.

Everyone’s “hard years” look different.

For some, it’s losing someone they love. For others, it’s financial struggles, health issues, broken relationships, loneliness, or simply feeling like they’ve lost themselves somewhere along the way. Pain isn’t something we can compare. Whatever weighs on your heart is real enough.

Looking back now, I realize I didn’t survive those years because I was exceptionally strong. I survived because I kept moving, even when the progress was almost invisible.

Some days, getting out of bed counted as a victory.

Some days, making one phone call or crossing one thing off the to-do list felt like climbing a mountain.

What got me through wasn’t one dramatic breakthrough. It was a collection of small things.

Family who checked in.

Friends who listened without trying to fix everything.

A good laugh when I needed it most.

Music that somehow understood exactly how I felt.

Quiet mornings.

Long drives.

Faith that reminded me there was still a purpose, even when I couldn’t see it.

And perhaps most importantly, the realization that hard seasons don’t last forever.

That’s easy to say when you’re looking back. It’s much harder to believe when you’re living through it. During the difficult times, it feels permanent. It feels like life will always be this heavy.

But life has a way of changing.

Slowly.

Almost quietly.

You don’t always notice it happening until one day you realize you’re smiling more than you’re worrying. You’re making plans again. You’re excited about tomorrow instead of simply trying to survive today.

The hard years leave their mark.

They change your priorities.

They teach you who really shows up when life gets messy.

They remind you not to take ordinary days for granted.

Most of all, they build compassion. Once you’ve walked through your own storms, you become a little gentler with people who are walking through theirs.

I don’t wish difficult seasons on anyone. But I can appreciate what they taught me.

They taught me resilience.

They taught me gratitude.

They taught me that asking for help isn’t weakness.

And they taught me that hope is often found in the smallest moments.

If you’re in your own chapter called The Hard Years, don’t give up on the story.

This chapter isn’t the ending.

It’s simply one part of a much bigger journey, and some of the best pages may still be waiting to be written.

Promote The Goat!

Firefighters battling the Rock Creek Fire near Colorado Springs got an unexpected teammate this week in the way of a friendly 4-year-old Nigerian dwarf goat named Goldie.

Instead of running away from the smoke, Goldie happily tagged along with firefighters for hours, leading crews down trails, munching on brush and even trying to sneak a bite of one firefighter’s lunch. While she didn’t officially join the department, she did help clear some vegetation by doing what goats do best: eating it.

Firefighters said Goldie’s surprise visit provided a welcome dose of laughter during a long, exhausting day on the fire line. Her owner joked that Goldie simply sensed the crews could use a little extra support.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department even shared the encounter on social media, joking that every crew needs a good leader and apparently this one had four legs.

Sometimes the best morale booster isn’t another firefighter… it’s a goat that refuses to clock out!

Daily Throwback @ The Pie!

On July 10th, 1962, Telstar 1 was launched into orbit, becoming the first active communications satellite capable of relaying live television, telephone and data signals across the Atlantic.

Before Telstar, live international TV simply wasn’t possible. If something happened in Europe, Americans often had to wait hours (or even days) to see it.

Just one day after launch, Telstar transmitted the first live television pictures between North America and Europe. Suddenly, the world felt a whole lot smaller.

Fun facts about Telstar:

1.Telstar was about the size of a beach ball.

2. It weighed just 171 pounds (77 kg).

3. It ushered in the satellite communications era that eventually led to today’s global TV, GPS, satellite internet and live worldwide sporting events.

A Bear Goes Shopping!

A young black bear wandered into the shopping mall at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska after triggering the building’s automatic doors. Once inside, the furry visitor calmly strolled into the commissary, grabbed a single peach, enjoyed its snack, then left behind an unexpected “souvenir” on the hallway floor before wildlife officers safely escorted it back into the woods. Thankfully, no people (or bears) were injured.
