On July 10th, 1962, Telstar 1 was launched into orbit, becoming the first active communications satellite capable of relaying live television, telephone and data signals across the Atlantic.
Before Telstar, live international TV simply wasn’t possible. If something happened in Europe, Americans often had to wait hours (or even days) to see it.
Just one day after launch, Telstar transmitted the first live television pictures between North America and Europe. Suddenly, the world felt a whole lot smaller.
Fun facts about Telstar:
1.Telstar was about the size of a beach ball.
2. It weighed just 171 pounds (77 kg).
3. It ushered in the satellite communications era that eventually led to today’s global TV, GPS, satellite internet and live worldwide sporting events.
