Iconic $1 Baked Potato!

One of the New York State Fair’s most beloved food traditions is getting a new lease on life—and it’s still just a buck.

The iconic $1 Potato Booth will have a new operator this year, with Tully’s Good Times taking over the stand. The state is paying Tully’s a $40,000 management fee, while also covering booth staffing and supplying the potatoes.

The deal is designed to keep the famous bargain alive, with fairgoers still able to grab a baked potato or Syracuse style salt potatoes with butter or sour cream for just $1. And this year, the potatoes will be New York grown, adding a little extra local flavor to a tradition that served more than 70,000 potatoes at last year’s fair.

So, despite a changing vendor, one thing remains the same: the $1 potato is still a New York State Fair tradition worth standing in line for.

The Missing Piece!

Sometimes the biggest family discoveries are hiding in plain sight. Two childhood friends recently learned that their lifelong connection was much more than coincidence—a DNA test revealed they are actually sisters.

The surprising discovery turned years of friendship into an extraordinary family story, showing how modern DNA testing can uncover connections people never knew existed. What began as a simple test ultimately filled in a missing piece of their family history and gave these two friends an entirely new reason to celebrate their bond.

It’s one of those rare stories where science doesn’t just reveal an answer—it changes the meaning of a lifetime of memories.

A Suspicious Package?

Washington, D.C., commuters got quite the surprise this week when a suspicious looking device tossed into a trash can near a fire station brought traffic to a standstill.

Police called in the bomb squad and a K-9 unit after spotting a blue and black electronic device with exposed wires. Wisconsin Avenue was shut down for nearly two hours while authorities investigated.

The big discovery? It wasn’t a bomb. It was an adult toy.

Police determined the device was an electronic sex pump, reportedly resembling a $300 plus product. No one was hurt, and the roadway was eventually reopened.

Just another reminder that in a city where anything can happen, even the trash can might have a story to tell.

A Demon Cavefish?

Scientists have made a remarkable discovery in North Alabama—a tiny, eyeless fish that managed to stay hidden for decades.

Researchers from the University of Alabama in Huntsville discovered the new species, officially named Demogorgonichthys arcanus, in Bobcat Cave beneath Redstone Arsenal. The pale, nearly colorless fish lives in total darkness and may be one of the rarest fish species in the world.

What makes the discovery even more surprising is that scientists have been monitoring the cave for roughly 40 years. The new fish was found living alongside the Southern Cavefish, but genetic testing revealed the two aren’t closely related. Instead, they independently evolved similar traits—like losing their eyes and pigmentation—to survive underground.

And yes, the name really does have a Stranger Things connection. “Demogorgonichthys” pays tribute to the mythical Demogorgon, while arcanus means “hidden” or “secret.”

It’s a pretty amazing reminder that even in places scientists have studied for decades, nature can still have a few surprises hiding in the dark.

An Unofficial World Record?

Talk about taking dad duty to the next level! Stephen Biebelhausen showed up to the Guardian Mile in Cleveland with his daughter, Blake, and a running stroller. He was hoping to break 4:44.

Instead, he absolutely crushed it—finishing the mile in an incredible 4:17 while pushing his daughter the entire way. That unofficially beat the previous Guinness World Record of 4:26.29.

The best part? He wasn’t even specifically training to break the record. Blake apparently loved every second of the ride, especially all the cheering from the crowd.

Dad gets a record, daughter gets a front row seat, and Mom gets an hour-long break. Everybody wins!

Daily Prompt @ The Pie!

Daily writing prompt
If you had a time machine and could send just one message to your past self, what would it say?

At first, I’d probably want to warn myself about things. Avoid this mistake. Don’t trust that person. Take that opportunity. Save more money. Worry less. Maybe even give myself a few winning lottery numbers.

But the older I get, the more I think I’d say something much simpler: “Relax. You’re going to be okay.”

I’d tell my younger self that not everything needs to be figured out right now. That some of the things keeping me awake at night won’t even matter a few years from now. And some of the things I think are the end of the world will eventually become stories I laugh about.

I’d tell myself to stop worrying so much about what other people think.

There will always be someone who doesn’t like you. Someone who misunderstands you. Someone who thinks you should be doing something different with your life. That’s okay. You don’t have to spend your entire life trying to convince everyone that you’re worth knowing.

I’d tell myself to appreciate the people who are there.

Call your parents. Spend more time with your friends. Take the pictures, even when you don’t feel like being in them. Stay up late talking about absolutely nothing. Take the trip. Sit around the table a little longer. Because one day, you’ll realize those ordinary moments weren’t ordinary at all.

They were the good things.

I’d also tell myself that failure isn’t something to be embarrassed about.

You’re going to screw things up. You’re going to make bad decisions. You’re going to trust people you shouldn’t and sometimes disappoint people who trusted you. You’re going to take a few wrong turns.

Keep going anyway.

Life isn’t a straight line. It’s more like driving down a back road with no GPS. Sometimes you know exactly where you’re going. Sometimes you have absolutely no idea. And every now and then, you end up somewhere you never planned to be—and discover you actually like it there.

And finally, I’d tell myself something I wish we all understood a little earlier: You don’t get to keep time.

Money can be made again. Cars can be replaced. Houses can be remodeled. Careers can change. But yesterday doesn’t have a return policy.

So stop waiting for the perfect moment.

The perfect moment is usually just the moment you’re standing in.

If I really had that time machine, I might be tempted to change some things. But maybe I wouldn’t.

Maybe every mistake, every heartbreak, every bad decision and every unexpected turn helped create the person standing here today.

So instead of trying to rewrite my past, I’d simply send one message back through time:

“Enjoy the ride. You’re going to lose some things. You’re going to find some things. You’re going to laugh, cry, screw up, fall in love, get back up and become someone you never expected to be. Don’t spend so much time worrying about the destination that you forget to enjoy the road.”
