Scientists have made a remarkable discovery in North Alabama—a tiny, eyeless fish that managed to stay hidden for decades.

Researchers from the University of Alabama in Huntsville discovered the new species, officially named Demogorgonichthys arcanus, in Bobcat Cave beneath Redstone Arsenal. The pale, nearly colorless fish lives in total darkness and may be one of the rarest fish species in the world.

What makes the discovery even more surprising is that scientists have been monitoring the cave for roughly 40 years. The new fish was found living alongside the Southern Cavefish, but genetic testing revealed the two aren’t closely related. Instead, they independently evolved similar traits—like losing their eyes and pigmentation—to survive underground.

And yes, the name really does have a Stranger Things connection. “Demogorgonichthys” pays tribute to the mythical Demogorgon, while arcanus means “hidden” or “secret.”

It’s a pretty amazing reminder that even in places scientists have studied for decades, nature can still have a few surprises hiding in the dark.
