RIP Voletta Wallace!

Voletta Wallace, the mother of the legendary rapper The Notorious B.I.G., passed away at the age of 78 on February 21, 2025.

She died of natural causes at her home in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, where she had been under hospice care, as confirmed by Monroe County Coroner Thomas Yanac.

A Jamaican immigrant and former preschool teacher, Wallace raised her only child, Christopher Wallace (better known as Biggie Smalls) in Brooklyn, New York, as a single mother after his father left when he was two.

Following Biggie’s tragic death in a still unsolved drive by shooting in Los Angeles in 1997 at age 24, Voletta became the steadfast guardian of his legacy.

Hooters of America, the iconic casual dining chain known for its wings and scantily clad waitresses, is reportedly on the brink of bankruptcy after accumulating a hefty $300 million debt.

As of late February 2025, the company is working with law firm Ropes & Gray and turnaround advisors from Accordion Partners to prepare for a potential Chapter 11 filing, expected within the next couple of months if plans proceed.

This follows a tough period marked by declining foot traffic, rising costs for food and rent, and the closure of around 40 underperforming locations in 2024 across states like Florida, Kentucky, and Texas.

Cocaine Filled Bananas?

In a recent operation at the Port of Manzanillo in Montecristi province, Dominican Republic, authorities confiscated a shipment of 303 ceramic bananas filled with cocaine.

The National Drug Control Agency, working alongside the Public Ministry, discovered the drugs during a routine inspection prompted by intelligence reports.

The ceramic bananas, designed to mimic real fruit with green coloring and a glossy finish, were packed in 16 boxes within a container destined for the Netherlands.

Forensic analysis confirmed the cocaine weighed 32.64 kilograms.

This seizure highlights the creative tactics drug traffickers employ and the ongoing efforts by Dominican authorities to combat such smuggling attempts.

An investigation is underway to uncover the network behind this operation.

NBA legend Michael Jordan has recently expanded his efforts to improve healthcare access by opening his fourth clinic in North Carolina.

On February 19, 2025, the latest Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic welcomed patients in Wilmington, his hometown. This 7,300 square foot facility, featuring 12 patient rooms, operates weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., focusing on providing primary care to uninsured and underinsured individuals.

Partnering with Novant Health, Jordan has now established four clinics across the state (two in Charlotte and two in Wilmington) following a $10 million donation that fueled the expansion.

His initiative, which began in 2019, continues to address healthcare gaps, offering not just medical services but also community support, with the Wilmington clinics alone making a significant impact in less than a year.

Jordan’s commitment reflects a personal connection to North Carolina, where he grew up and built his legacy, both on and off the basketball court.

Does the name Doug Turner ring a bell for you?

He’s the 87 year old widower from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, who captured hearts worldwide with his charming tradition.

After losing his wife a few years ago, Doug started hosting an annual “Winter Party” to stay connected with his neighbors. This year, he sent out hand written notes (complete with a little snowflake drawing) inviting about two dozen folks to join him for a celebration starting at “4 p.m. until the cops arrive,” a playful line he’s fond of using.

He delivered each one door to door, including to his new neighbor Michelle Hernandez, who caught the sweet moment on her Ring camera and shared it on TikTok.

The video blew up, racking up millions of views as people fell for Doug’s warmth and old school charm. Strangers from as far as Alaska and Australia wanted to crash the party, and even Michael Bublé expressed interest!

Doug kept it local, though. It was just him, his neighbors, some charcuterie, wine, and desserts. The party went off without a hitch, lasting until midnight, and, as Doug happily noted, the cops never showed up. Now, he’s even inspired others to throw their own neighborhood gatherings.
